Boardwalk / Temple House, Thailand
One of the important practices that monks should do every day is walking meditation. The purpose of walking is to allow the monk to become aware of the present existence of things. Self and contexts.
The architecture is designed to blend into the mountainous landscape around the temple. To merge the daily practice of the monk in architecture seamlessly with nature. As the practice continues on the path, they have encountered not only themselves but also the existence of the environment. It can extend the old limitation of meditation by walking in the limited area to the new way of meditating.
WALK / HOUSE is a quiet part, surrounded by trees and mountains, of a temple “Wat Thammayan” in Petchabun, Thailand, where is not only for an abbot to live but also to maintain his daily ritual practice with others monks – a walking meditation.
Instead of designing a traditional house, a key concept of walking meditation which is a focus on the current dimensions of earth and sky to enhance awareness of mental and physical states, has been reinterpreted in the architectural context.
The configuration of the house is wide and long, facing east to receive a soft morning light, facing the great landscape of this distant temple.
The 59 meter long continuous roof covers the entire space, with a slope that follows the contour of the mountain. The space under and above the roof is designed to accommodate and support daily practices, including walking.
Parts of the roof are recessed allowing trees to grow and the passage of sunlight and rain. Meanwhile, the shape of the long, curved roof helps divert rainwater to the center line of the roof and fall to the ground at the very end of the roof – mimicking a natural runoff down the mountain.
Under the curved roof; the lowest ceiling space, there are different functional areas for the abbot; comprising a sleeping area, a work area and a prayer area. The interior space is compact, which is the attempt to compromise the nature of Buddhism – humility, uprightness.
The long continuous path, which also follows natural contours, has a gentle slope for a comfortable walk. Step, flat and curve are the elements described in the path, together with different simple materials; such as cobblestones, mosaic tiles, dirt and grass. Allow monks to walk barefoot and feel the differences.
The goal of the WALK/HOUSE is to offer no boundaries for monks to meditate while walking, with the hope of enhancing their ritual practice – anywhere.
