Some Khalistan extremists in Canada on Wednesday vandalized the BAPS Swaminarayan Temple in Toronto in an unprovoked attack and wrote anti-Indian graffiti on it. In several videos shared on social media, the walls of the temple were painted with the slogans “Khalistan Zindabad, Hindustan Murdabad”. The incident was denounced by the Indian High Commission, which also announced that it had asked the Canadian authorities to look into the matter.

“We vehemently condemn the anti-Indian graffiti that has been painted on the BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Toronto. have called on the Canadian government to investigate the incident and act quickly against anyone responsible,” the high commission tweeted. Hindu Canadians have good reason to be concerned about hate crimes committed against Hindu temples, according to Chandra Arya, Member of Parliament for Canada.
“All should condemn the vandalism committed by Canadian Khalistan extremists against the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Toronto. This is not a singular incident. These types of hate crimes have recently targeted Hindu temples in Canada. Hindus in Canada have good reason to be concerned,” Arya said in a tweet.

The words “Khalistan Zindabad, Hindustan Murdabad” were spray painted on the walls of the temple in several social media videos. The vandalism at the Swaminarayan Mandir in Etobicoke, according to Canadian MP Ruby Sahota, is “disgusting and disrespectful”. “In Canada, everyone has the freedom to practice their religion without fear or intimidation. The perpetrators of this crime should be held accountable,” she said in a tweet. Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown expressed his displeasure with the vandalism. “Canada’s GTA is no place for this kind of hate. Let’s hope the perpetrators of this crime are quickly brought to justice,” he tweeted.

Six Hindu temples were attacked in Toronto in February of this year. The attackers took ornaments from the idols that were taken, as well as money from donation boxes. The first break-in attempt at the Shri Hanuman Mandir in Brampton, a city in Greater Toronto, failed on January 15, signaling the start of attacks on temples. The thugs tried once more, after which they launched into a rant.
