Outreach and Communication Assistant for Temple Beth Shalom – ELCA Grand Canyon Synod

Temple Beth Shalom, a Reform Jewish congregation in the Northwest Valley of around 200 members, is looking to fill a new part-time position. We have a very diverse membership population that ranges from young adults with and without children to a large population of older and older members, whose needs are quite different from those of our young members. For many of our members, Judaism is their religion by choice. Many of our members are part of an interfaith family and / or are same sex partners / spouses. We strive to create a welcoming and inclusive community that encourages worship, education and social activities

The position of Communication and communication assistant is one that requires the incumbent to get to know and communicate regularly in an informal way with our members, in order to work effectively closely with the rabbi on the outreach and efforts of other members. Also works with the program director and synagogue administrator to implement communication strategies that support programs identified by temple committees, and edit and produce weekly and monthly publications designed for communications with members of the temple.

Being Jewish is not a requirement for this position, but the incumbent should have an interest in acquiring knowledge of Judaism and occasionally attending temple services, events, activities or programs in order to understand and speak with knowledge. and enthusiasm for “who we are and what we do”. This is a 16 to 20 hour shift per week. The work week will be 4 to 5 hours per day (including a short lunch break), Tuesday to Friday. The incumbent is eligible for paid vacation and a generous number of paid holidays, as defined by TBS policy.

Applicants will have a minimum of 5-7 years of work in planning, communication and administration, including at least 3 years of work with senior executives in a religious congregation. Some knowledge of the Jewish faith is a plus, but not necessary, if you wish to learn. Knowledge and experience in the use of desktop computer applications and some form of desktop publishing is required. Previous experience writing press releases and newspaper articles is preferred.
