KUALA LUMPUR, May 6 — A Buddhist temple in Singapore is holding an inaugural pet blessing ceremony on the eve of Wesak Day.

In a statement on his Facebook page, Thekchen Choling said the event would be held at the temple located at Beatty Lane in Kallang on May 14 from 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

It was, they said, a celebration of Buddha’s universal love for all beings, including animals.

Along with a blessing ceremony for the pets, there will also be light offerings, paw painting and photo ops.

According to them, the blessing of animals would be conducted by the Venerables of the temple while pet owners can offer lights with their pets to earn merits as a family.

“Light symbolizes hope and lighting a candle for Buddha brings positivity to you and your pet.

“Make your heartfelt wishes with your pet to earn merits together as one family,” the temple said.

As for the paw painting, it will be created by pets and guided by animators.

The temple will also be decorated in a Wesak theme, with sky lanterns and lights making it ideal for photo ops.

Although all activities are free, devotees are encouraged to donate to the temple’s Animal Welfare Fund.

Along with the event, the temple will also provide gifts such as pet food.

Wesak Day is celebrated by Buddhists to commemorate the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha.
